I can certainly record my own music, the MIDI doesn't sound that bad on my synthesizer!

You may be able to record your own music with your synthesizer, but no synthesizer can give you CD quality music.  If you decide that your own recording system is just "good enough" for your compositions, then you are underestimating the power of "CD quality" and its influencing factors.  I have every professional tool that is necessary to create a high quality recording.

What do you do differently than a typical studio?

I focus on digital music (MIDI), not live music.  Live music, obviously sounds live, and better than your traditional MIDI....however my digital music recording system can record MIDI music to sound just as live....with many more benefits.  This MIDI recording enables me to record music you never thought you could get recorded.  Another benefit is that my recordings are extremely flexible.  I can make it play EXACTLY the way you want, as fast, as slow, as loud as you want.

Do your recordings sound as good as an "actual" performance?

This depends on the type of music it is, and the quality of your MIDI file.  For rock, pop, rap, some jazz...it most certainly can sound like an actual performance.  A piano solo can DEFINITELY sound as good as an actual performance.  A string quartet can sound pretty convincing, so can a woodwind quartet.  As for big orchestral works.....I can get them to sound pretty good, and for the most part, a recording can trick an average listener into thinking it was a real recording.....but there is still no way an emulated MIDI file can sound as good as a real symphony.  And I don't know of any studio that will record live a symphony for you, without breaking your wallet.
