Johann Sebastian Bach Biography |
| Johann Sebastian Bach was one of the best composers in the Baroque
Era. He wrote many works, including fugues, preludes, toccatas,
concerti, symphonies, harpsichord and organ music. Many people
were influenced by the works of Johann Sebastian Bach such as Felix
Mendelssohn and Frederic Chopin. Felix Mendelssohn was actually
the one who discovered Johann Sebastian Bach and revived his works.
Frederic Chopin was highly influenced by Bach, and in much of Chopin's
greater works, you can hear a much improved Johann Sebastian Bach style.
It is interesting, and I suggest you listen to Chopin's music very
closely. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the famous Dracula's Theme, really called a toccata. It is perhaps the best work of Johann Sebastian Bach. This piece of music was even used in atari video games in the 1980's. Bach also wrote pieces called inventions. They were short pieces usually written for the piano or harpsichord, and had a great musical quality to them. Johann Sebastian Bach also wrote sonatinas, which usually were short and happy pieces. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote over 1000 compositions, many of them are not even performed, but the manuscripts are still available. The music of Johann Sebastian Bach usually sounds very peaceful, and sometimes the music just doesn't seem to stop. He followed a specific formula while composing, so much of his music may sound a bit monotonous, however his music is valuable if listened to closely enough. Actually, the era that Johann Sebastian Bach was in, was the era that music started to evolve. Before the time of Johann Sebastian Bach, music was very traditional, boring, and had too specific formats. Johann Sebastian Bach invented a new form, which is very hard to do when you have nothing to work with. To give you an example, Chopin had much to work with, he got ideas from Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and probably more. Johann Sebastian Bach got his ideas from nobody but himself. This is probably the main reason why some of his music sounds monotonous to us today. Bach in the 1600's however, his music was regarded as the best. Even today, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach is regarded as very high quality, just not in high demand. Nevertheless, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach can greatly benefit anyone who desires to compose high quality music. Frederic Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn are a great examples of this. They listened to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and being as creative as they are, they composed with the hint of influence of Johann Sebastian Bach. As a result, the quality of the music of Frederic Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn is superb. |
